The “Old” Way of Receiving Online Payments

Are you following the lead of other industries when implementing efficient payment mechanisms such as online bill-pay? By increasing the percentage of patients who pay online, providers can improve the speed and dollar amount of collections.

When it comes to accepting payment, the experience matters. Options should be user-friendly, seamless and properly branded to promote electronic adoption.

Legacy forms. For example, many providers still use manual forms to capture payments online. These require patients to fill in data such as name, account number, address, payment method, etc. Each time a patient makes an entry, there’s a possibility for errors, which then require the attention of administrative staff. Furthermore, personnel at the provider, after receiving the form, must take a separate step to manually enter information into a payment processing mechanism. Therefore, the payment does not process immediately upon submission by the patient.

Legacy quick-pay approaches. Some providers use third-party payment tools that do process payments immediately, in the form of quick-payments via forms completed on third-party websites. In this case, the payment processes real-time, but the provider still has to receive data and enter it into its practice management system to credit the patient’s account. This disjointed process is prone to errors.

Instead of these and other ways that require manual keying, providers can use newer tools that integrate directly with practice management software and process payments immediately upon submission by patients. These are user-friendly on both sides of the transaction and allow a properly branded user interface.
